Day 1: Hitting the Ground Running

We want to make the best of this experience and therefore from the moment our group set foot in Johannesburg we have not stopped for a minute. Our day was full getting to know the campus and our new friends. We also immersed ourselves into the Seminal Readings, which is a selection of texts for the whole school to review and discuss. There is a topic for this year, which is “Challenging our assumptions”. We will be involved in this reading series for the next three days. We had our first group conversation today within our groups and tomorrow we will be joining the rest of the ALA community in their discussions and activities.

Day 1: Porter’s students arrive at the African Leadership Academy!

From all accounts, the flight from NYC to Johannesburg went smoothly. Everyone’s luggage appeared and they cleared customs with ease. An ALA bus was waiting for them and they traveled across town to the ALA campus where their Chomies (host students), some ALA faculty and a snack were waiting to welcome the group.

Currently, students are moving into their dorms, after which they will meet up with their Chomies again for lunch in the Dining Hall.
