We have definitely hit the ground running in our trip to ALA. Our first day in South Africa brought us to the township of Soweto. There we met three local entrepreneurs that are working hard to steer change and contribute to the development of this community.
We first met Sphelele Dlamini who only five years ago stated NtoZinhle, a jewelry and accessories brand that has now become a favorite brand among celebrities (including Beyoncé) and employs 30 local workers.
We then met Thabo Modise, who manages Shova Lifestyle Origin, a local art and design brand distributing work from 10 community artists. Finally we met Tsholofelo Wechoema who started Boipelo Agritech two years ago. She’s an urban farmer transforming her community by making healthy vegetables available in her neighborhood.
What an inspiring trip it’s been, as we have learned firsthand the power of local entrepreneurship and the impact of one person’s dedicated work. We are now en route back to school for dinner and to spend some more time with our host students.
