Today was our first day at school!
It was the first day back from holiday vacation!
The schedule started with an early meeting to make sure that we were all on time and had a short time to see each other and catch up before homeroom. Everyone admired each other’s uniforms and caught up on the events of the day before.
Then, it was time for homeroom!
We fit right in! Each homeroom class is heated, but the hallways at school are quite cold to preserve energy. The Porter’s students were mostly in different homeroom classes, but many shared the same experiences. Students caught up on their winter vacation experiences and started to plan for upcoming events and projects.
Today’s special schedule meant that after homeroom was the Opening Ceremony! Students lined up based on their homerooms and listened as the principal and other school officials started the new term. Then, our own Maggie M. got up on stage, bowed to the administrators, and gave a speech explaining InterMission and the Porter’s experience. The speech was written during our first week in Farmington and also expressed how happy we were to be visiting the Kichijo School. Maggie spoke for all of us when she said we were happy to answer questions and were having a great time in Tokyo so far! Rikako Takaki gave the welcoming speech representing the students at Kichijo. See both videos below:
We continued the day with a tour of the school, getting acquainted with our schedule for the next two weeks, and a meeting with Principal Noriko Fujimoto.
We saw Mt. Fuji today! As we toured the Kichijo School for the first time, we made a stop at the rooftop garden and there it was, off in the distance! This beautiful peak is not for climbing in the winter, but Kichijo students make the journey over the summer to crest it. Six hours to the top – a different kind of Mountain Day! #missporters #porters #mpsintermission #portersinjapan #mtfuji
The special schedule meant that school ended at or before lunch time, depending on the student’s grade and activities. So, the day is ours to enjoy – look out for more photos soon!
